Little boxes, little boxes

We’re at the stage in the game where we’ve started planning the kid’s room (I refuse to call it a nursery, because the word nursery sounds kind of fruity to me and anyway, a nursery is where you buy plants) (and when I say the kid’s room, I really mean a nice place for me to hang out, as I’m pretty sure the kid isn’t going to give a shit about her room…I mean, can kids even see anything before the age of two? Three?*) and I use the word “planning” very, very loosely, as here’s what we’ve done so far:

Me: LIME GREEN!

Chris: Yeah! Lime green!

Me: And purple! Dark purple!

Chris: Yeah! Purple!

Me: No pink; I hate pink.

Chris: Yeah, no pink! If I wanted to raise a pussy, I would name her Doctor Quinn or Medicine Woman.

So, we’ve chosen a color theme — lime green and dark purple, my two favorite colors — and here’s the part where I scour the Internet for cute lime green and dark purple items and I come up completely empty. Did you know if you’re having a boy, his room should be blue and if you’re having a girl, her room should pink? I thought in 2011, there would be choices. I thought kids wouldn’t have to fit into nice neat little pre-determined boxes. I thought wrong.

I get that my hating pink is in no way unique and it’s not even that I hate it, really — baby girls in little pink clothes, there’s nothing cuter, really — I just can’t get past the fact that pink and blue are the only choices we have. (Sure, I could throw money at the problem and have something custom-made, but dammit if that doesn’t go against everything I believe in — which isn’t much…Basically it’s spend as little on this kid as possible. Between childcare and feeding her and putting clothes on her back, she’s really going to be cramping my style, financially. Mamma likes nice things.)

I guess there’s really no winning here. I definitely don’t want anything over-the-top or special, but I (still definitely) don’t want anything standard and pink. I don’t want to put a lot of money or work into her my the room, but I also have very specific things I don’t want and things I do want and usually specificity like this means cash money.

Obviously I know we’ll find something that works for all of us, something that looks nothing like this (that was one of the guest rooms when we bought this house) and all will be right with my world. But for now, it’s aggravating as all hell. The man is bringing me down, man!

*Chris, that was for you.

But we will find you um.. stuff for the baby’s room I promise!

I’m going to make a suggestion that you can feel free to take or leave. Obviously. Separates. Find a lime green crib sheet. Find a purple quilt or blanket that you love. Find a cute pillow on etsy to put on the rocking chair. I imagine you have enough style to pull this off and make it look nice. I do not so I threw money at the problem. Or my mother did anyway. There’s no rule that says you have to buy a complete bedding set for your baby.

Okay, I couldn’t resist. This blanket, in grape, is what I immediately thought of. Maybe instead of a quilt? Since the baby doesn’t ever actually use the quilt. http://www.shopgussy.com/product/baby-blanket-choose-your-color-set-1

  4. Purple is Scott’s and my favorite color–it’s what we did everything for our wedding in! And purple-and-green are a fantastic combination. I approve!

And Chris’ Dr. Quinn comment made me snort!

Purple and green sound like an awesome combo. My apartment in law school was entirely purple and white. My current living room is “Wasabi Green” (which I LOVE).

I like Mamabub’s suggestion for decorating. I bet you can find some really cool accessories in those colors and be able to save money for Mama’s post-baby Champagne fund. 😉

  6. I love the idea of purple and green – great colors. Perfect.

And I can’t believe the Chris wormhole y’all stumbled upon there. How crazy is that?

ok, i had the same problem when i was planning for my wedding.
I assume its just the same. or with decorating any room.

You don’t want a cookie cutter bed in a bag kinda room.

Mama Bub has the perfect idea! Look in unconventional places. etsy is the best. Commission a local seamstress, locate one on etsy, visit “trendy” fabric stores. I know how much you love bako, but at strawberry patches in town they LOVE to hook people up with talented sew-ers!

I would do it for you, but i havn’t had much work with crib bedding, but anything else i’d love to do for you!

Also- I”ve been away from blog world so long that…… YOU’RE HAVING A BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ok. now that thats done.

I did Claire’s room in the most adorable shade of lime green paint – it’s called Lime Rickey from Sherwin Williams. I had my mom make bedding because I couldn’t find anything that didn’t want to make me throw up. I found all the fabrics online and tons of accessories on Etsy. People will often make custom stuff on Etsy and it’s usually pretty reasonable. Have fun. I think purple with lime green sounds fabulous!
